新年夜指日可待，纽约市将再次于时代广场用LED灯点亮倒计时水晶球来庆祝。下周二晚11:59分，所有的目光都会被沃特福德水晶球所吸引，它由672个LED模块组成（共计32256个飞利浦Luxeon Rebel LED灯）。由于采用了高效节能技术，水晶球将会在空中绽放出绚丽多彩的光芒。

这个举世闻名的球体直径为12英尺，重达11875磅，为实现其迷人效果，球体表面覆盖着2688个用以折射和反射光线的三角形水晶体。今年球体有了特殊变化，削弱了原有的复杂的楔形结构，从而创造出更加千变万化的效果。

New Year’s Eve is just around the corner, and NYC will once again be celebrating with a dazzling LED ball drop in Times Square. Come 11:59PM next Tuesday, all eyes will be on the Waterford Crystal-clad geodesic sphere, which boasts 672 LED modules (for a total of 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs) this year. Thanks to the energy-efficient lights, the famous orb will be able to shine in a myriad of glittering color combos.

The world-famous New Year’s ball is twelve feet in diameter and a whopping 11,875 pounds. To achieve its mesmerizing effect, the surface of the geodesic sphere is covered in 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles, which reflect and refract light. The crystals on this year’s ball are extra special, with intricate wedge cuts that create kaleidoscopic patterns.

Behind the crystals are the LED modules affixed to the ball’s frame. The energy-efficient Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs each have 12 red, 12 blue, 12 green and 12 white LEDS, making 8,064 of each color over the ball’s surface. Together, the LEDs can emit a palette of over 16 million colors and billions of patterns to for the crowd of thousands that gather in Times Square to watch it first hand.

This year marks the 109th New Year’s celebration in Times Square, and the sixth year the ball has been made with energy-efficient LED lights.
