水的保留是项目的头等大事。“河”里的水在被回收到此系统之前首先要经过一个水生沼泽，在沼泽里面的水生植物“清洗”之后又将经过一个UV过滤器进行过滤处理。这个过程中没有使用任何的化学物质。因此，儿童们可以安全地在水中玩耍，沼泽中的水生植物也能健康地生长。另外，农场站还是一个雨水收集器，任何一滴雨水都能被回收到“河”的系统之中。

The concept design of the outdoor educational facility for the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County was to build an interactive play area. The idea is to connect children with nature and inspire future learning and a commitment to sustainable practices.

Children can learn about metamorphosis and pollination in Mary's (from the Spanish word for butterfly: Mariposa) Garden, as well as, grow, harvest, and "sell" fruits and veggies at the Farm Stand.The design was also developed by looking at a transect of the environments in Sonoma county—from the inland agricultural valleys to the Pacific Ocean. The project is therefore centered on the main water feature; the “Russian River” begins at the headwaters in the hill and flows through the site to the beach, passing through gravel beds and marshes along the way, allowing for a very dynamic and fun learning experience. Part of the water is used at the “mechanical water area” to demonstrate hydropower and different water lifting and management devises such as hand pumps, Archimedes screws, and dams.

Water conservation was a major consideration in executing the project. Water from the “river” is first cleansed through vegetative material in a living marsh, then through a UV filter, before being recycled back through the system. No chemicals are used and this allows for children to safely play in the water and for the plants in the marsh to thrive. The farm stand also features a rainwater catchment so that any rainwater can be fed to the “river” system.
