HOW WE WILL LIVE TOMORROW: KHRUSHCHYOVKA 2.0. Part II
2020-2021
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the boundaries of our physical environment have been reduced to a minimum - to the boundaries of our houses and apartments. We all had to leave the public space for a while and limit our existence to a personal zone. In this project, the boundaries of privacy are redefined in a 1-510 series prefabricated building typical for the Russian landscape. In Russia they are called "Khrushchevka" named after Nikita Khrushchev, who initiated the construction of such prefabricated buildings in the 1960s of the 20th century. In 2021, more than 1.5 million inhabitants of Moscow live in Khrushchevkas. Today these buildings are a part of our collective memory; there is nearly no person who has never lived in such a house. Khrushchevka 2.0 is a multi-layered construct in which the future, present and past are inextricably linked. This structure is constantly changing, like a living organism, and has no complete form. The dense grid of traditional residential cells is dissolved, and in place of the old living spaces, communal areas are created, which can be easily converted back into individual apartments, as the constructive grid is preserved. The prototype of the capsules are the balconies and loggias, a space that is an external element of the building but belongs to the apartment. The exterior wall of the old building forms a boundary between the apartment in Khrushchevka and the capsule and works as a portal to another dimension, where one can go to a very personal place. The personalized capsules are made of recycled materials obtained after the dismantling of part of the building. They represent a pataphysical space that offers an escape to another world, a reboot from everyday life, and tell their own stories about the inhabitants.
