Secondary School “A. Lozer” - International competition

Lozer Secondary School, located in the district of “Torre” (Pordenone), was initially conceived as an isolated element away from the city and a string of undifferentiated places. It has been redesigned throughout new architectural devices allowing the encroachment between school and city, the intersection between education, direct experiences and recreational activities, overcoming the line between exterior and interior, between natural and artificial environment. The project re-elaborates in a simple and elegatn way typical elements of the citiy’s historical and cultural heritage, whose features harmonize with the immediate surroundings and the additional series of green spaces characterizing it. Volumes are arranged around a large central courtyard, an empy space emphasized by the suspended walkway and a series of trees visually correlating all the surrounding spaces. The way the planimetry has been conceived allows the indipendent use of the gym and the auditorium, opened to the community for different periods and uses rather than educational only. Classrooms, 21 in number with an area of 50 sq. m., show their configuration within a regular and precise structural network defined by mobile e versatile panels in order to have aggregation and communication between adiacent classrooms in accordance with speficic educational needs. The classroom environment is expanded throughout the insertion of the wide central corridor that is not limited to fulfilling a distribution function, whereas it is a sharing space. The gym is located on the original school structure in a strategic position as it guarantees two different entrances. The steel structural system has been used with a maximum overall distance between the columns centre of 62X26,5 m. This system is composed of HEB300 pillars, IPE300 main beams, IPE140 beams and a collaborating slab-type with hi-bond corrugated sheets 30 cm. thick. From an energetic perspective, the use of photovoltaic panels made up of natural fibres provides for the building’s energy indipendence. Panels are intended to cover the roofs of both school and gym with a 0° degree azimuth angle and a 15° inclination, in order to obtain a maximized amount of energy. Following in loco surveys and from the graphic results, interwoven with the sun paths, the influence of obstacles around installation site was determined, obtaining a 0% value.
