PolyShell is the result of a research question which investigates how ultra-thin sheet materials of almost negligible inherent stiffness can be re-formed into structures capable of enclosing large volumes.
The design and fabrication of the structure used a number of digital tools that are fast becoming an integral part of modern contemporary engineering and architectural culture – parametric geometry modelling, optimisation algorithms and digital fabrication.
The shell structure is made from 100% recycled polypropylene sheets which are laser cut and scored so that they can be easily folded into stiff boxes. The boxes are interconnected using simple plastic pop rivets to form a rigid shell structure.
The surface geometry was developed to create a sense of enclosure and personal space – contrasting directly with the large open volume of the Muziekgebouw, which houses the exhibition. The material modifies the light and acoustics within the space helping to intensify the experience.
