Architect:Mitchell + Corti Architects
Location:Notting Hill Gate, London, UK
Project Year:2019
Category:Apartments Private Houses
This project by Mitchell + Corti Architects began with an old terrace house: run down, tired and blue, with mock features, a tight spiral staircase, haphazard layout, low ceilings and jaded decor. We were approached to assist our young client in boosting this property’s spirits from dejected to dynamic by creating an invitingly bright and well-organised home.
We set out to marry a traditional exterior with cleverly designed contemporary spaces.

Through vaulting and exposing the shape of the traditional butterfly roof, we were able to insert large expanses of glazing and in doing so obtain light penetration that resonates throughout the building. This key design move also allowed to accommodate double the storage capacity and aided us to achieve an entirely new sense of space. Now walk in and you will see blue: sky blue.

'Butterfly Maisonette' offered the challenge to turn a typical house typology into a surprising, unconventional home, all on a tight budget. The layout of a period shell was transformed to host a modern lifestyle, providing a sense of spaciousness that nurtures interaction in a buoyant environment.

Emphasising and celebrating the shape of the roof by raising and vaulting the ceilings allowed for the insertion of seamless and tactically located skylights and the creation of newly proportioned rooms in a considered arrangement. All rear openings were substantially increased, and the character of the house was reversed from introvert to extrovert.

Now the sad old mid-terrace blues are gone, replaced by others: the positive shades of sky and spirit-lifting tones in kitchen, bathroom and tiles.
The challenge of achieving a two-bed, two-bath home with open plan living, entry hall, utility and cloakroom in 70m2 seemed an unrealistic one, but by working closely with the client we were able to develop a two-storey extension and create an airy and compact, yet extremely functional London home.

The dated and dysfunctional pre-existing layout underwent a complete redesignation of space. The property was entirely gutted, retaining only the outer walls and roof shape, and the work began to provide the house with light-filled rooms from top to bottom.
We sought to create a home where day-to-day activities can be performed smoothly and with a sense of well-being in a balanced environment that offers privacy and personal space within the convivial atmosphere of a well organised light-filled home.
