Architect:MSR Design (Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle, Ltd.) JRA Architects
Location:Louisville KY USA, United States
Project Year:2014
Category:Libraries
Having completed a master plan for the Louisville Free Public Library, MS&R (in collaboration with a local architect) is designing the first of three new recommended 40,000 square-foot regional libraries. Design goals include creating a community-gathering place that is welcoming to all ages and fosters interactivity within a flexible, sustainable building. The client is seeking LEED Gold certification. Located in southwest Louisville, this first branch will serve as a template for the other regional libraries. The construction will employ a standardized structural steel frame—similar to those used in big box retail stores—that can be easily adapted for the next two libraries. Each building will be sited to take advantage of solar orientation for daylight, take advantage of specific site conditions for access and stormwater management, and feature an exterior that is unique to its neighborhood context. By using a standard structural system customized to each community, the buildings will provide quality design and construction within a limited budget. The design of the Southwest Regional Branch focuses on using common materials in creative ways. Standardized components—including skylights, modular masonry, and raised flooring—form a low maintenance, highly flexible public place.
