Architect:CORE architecture + design
Location:Washington, DC, USA
Project Year:2012
Category:Libraries
Originally designed in 1925 by New York architect Edward Lippincott Tilton, the historic Mt. Pleasant Library (part of the Carnegie Mellon library program) in Northwest, Washington, D.C., is now undergoing modernization and expansion. Designed by CORE Architecture & Design with HMA2 Architects, the 25,000 square-foot project, which is comprised of 16,500 sf of renovated space and 8,500 sf of new construction, will include new community rooms, space for 80,000 books, and other modern upgrades.
The project puts the existing building at center stage, respecting its strong architectural character and historic nature without compromising its symmetry or balance. Linked in the rear to the existing building by a glass, skylit atrium is a new terra cotta paneled wing, directly referencing the materiality of the original building’s roof and the color tones of the building as a whole.
The addition allows the Library’s collection to be completely housed in the renovated historic building, moving all the services, a meeting room and staff offices and utility spaces into it’s new space. A new, landscaped garden creates a transition point taking patrons to a new entry positioned at the intersection of the old and new, thereby resolving accessibility issues without compromising the historic front façade.
