MA Yansong 马岩松
- Topic - Past and future
In the future, architecture should be integrated into nature shaping a landscape where one can find spiritual belonging in the city.
As an architect, I want to create a surreal atmosphere, so that the people who visit, relax here have the possibility of engaging in a dialogue with the past and the future. Time and space are dissolved, and placed against each other.
- Personal Bio -Beijing-born architect Ma Yansong is recognized as an important voice in the new generation of architects. He is the first Chinese architect to win an overseas landmark-building project. As the founder and principal of MAD Architects, Ma leads design across various scales. At MAD, Ma has created a series of imaginative works, including Absolute Towers, Harbin Opera House, Hutong Bubble 32, Ordos Museum, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, etc.
In 2006, Ma was awarded the “Young Architects Award” by the Architectural League of New York. In 2008 he was selected as one of the “20 Most Influential Young Architects” by ICON magazine. Fast Company respectively named him one of the “10 Most Creative People in Architecture in 2009” and one of the “100 Most Creative People in Business in 2014.” In 2010 he became the first architect from China to receive a RIBA fellowship. In 2014 he was awarded “Young Global Leaders (YGL)” by World Economic Forum. In 2012, his iconic project “Absolute Towers,” two residential towers in Mississauga, Canada was named the “Best Tall Building in the Americas” by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

- Topic -The Future of Architecture:Spontaneous and Virtual
The built environment must progress in step with progress of society. The task of avant-garde architecture is to explore how best to guide the development of the built environment in ways that are congenial to the opportunities and challenges of societal development at the frontier of progress. What characterizes recent and current socio-economic transformations is the shift from an economy based on mechanical mass production to an economy based on robotic fabrication and web-based services that allow for much higher rates of innovation.
The unprecedented level of dynamism in social interaction processes in contemporary creative industry work environments calls for adaptive, responsive and indeed creative built environments. The concept of ‘intelligent buildings’ has to be radicalized to include perceptive and responsive environments, indeed AI-empowered intelligent, and indeed creative environments that operate in a self-directed fashion. Architectural agents must become spontaneous, congenial participants in the collective life process. This life process will increasingly include virtual participation. This implies that our spaces should seamlessly extend into virtual spaces of communication, into ‘cyberspace’.
- Personal Bio -Patrik Schumacher is the principal of Zaha Hadid Architects and is leading the firm since Zaha Hadid’s passing in March 2016. He joined Zaha Hadid in 1988 and was seminal in developing Zaha Hadid Architects to become a 450 strong global architecture and design brand.
Patrik Schumacher studied philosophy, mathematics, and architecture in Bonn, Stuttgart, and London. In 2010 Patrik Schumacher won the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Stirling Prize for excellence in architecture together with Zaha Hadid, for MAXXI, the National Italian Museum for Art and Architecture of the 21st century in Rome. He is an academician of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
In 1996 he founded the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association in London where he continues to teach. Patrik Schumacher is lecturing worldwide and is currently a guest professor at Tongji University, Shanghai.
In 2008 he coined the phrase Parametricism and has since published a series of manifestos promoting Parametricism as the new epochal style for the 21st century. In 2010/2012 he published his two-volume theoretical opus magnum “The Autopoiesis of Architecture”. Patrik Schumacher is widely recognized as one of the most prominent thought leaders within the fields of architecture, urbanism, and design.

演讲嘉宾
Prof. Bradley Cantrell & Prof. Biao LI
Prof. Bradley Cantrell
University of Virginia School of Architecture
- Topic -Adaptive Epistemology:failure, nascent vocabularies, and new wilds
The talk will outline a view of the built environment that is critical to develop for designers in the coming century. The problems we face are larger than ever before, are embedded with infinite complexity, and are outside of our cultural understanding. Landscape Architecture and the landscape itself can provide a sinuous connection between our lives, the architecture we inhabit, the urbanism that expresses our desire, and the environments that sustain our very existence. The interface between the built environment and evolving biological and geological systems requires a blurring of previous strategies to address nascent forms of simulation, sensing, logistics, biological engineering, and technological interface to question the dichotomy of the constructed and the natural.
- Personal Bio -Bradley Cantrell is a landscape architect and scholar whose work focuses on the role of computation and media in environmental and ecological design. He has held academic appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, The Rhode Island School of Design, and the Louisiana State University Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture. His work in Louisiana over the past decade points to a series of methodologies that develop modes of modeling, simulation, and embedded computation that express and engage the complexity of overlapping physical, cultural, and economic systems. Cantrell’s work has been presented and published in a range of peer-reviewed venues internationally including ACADIA, CELA, EDRA, ASAH, and ARCC.
Prof. Biao LI
Southeast University
- Topic -Teaching & Research Exploration
of Digital Design
- Personal Bio -Li Biao serves as the deputy director of National Architectural Digital Technology Teaching Committee, the deputy director of Computational Design Committee of the Architectural Society of China, and the director of Digital Construction Committee of the Architectural Society of China. He is mostly engaged in the research and teaching of the theories and methods related to digital technologies for architectural design. Li Biao obtained an advanced master’s degree from Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH, Zurich), a doctor’s degree in architecture from Southeast University (nominated for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in 2010), and engaged in postdoctoral research in Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETHZ) between 2009-2013. He has published more than 40 papers on various academic journals or at various conferences at home and abroad. He has led three national programs funded by NSFC, participated in one key funded program and led one sub-project of the national key R&D plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology during the 13th Five-year Plan Period.
