This private home in Los Angeles, USA, is the home of novelist and television writer Patrick Somerville and his wife Alexis, designed by design studio Jeff Troyer. They've been living here for almost a decade, but in the near future, they'll still be moving back to the Midwest, where they're all from and where they'll be raising their three children.

Patrick Somerville and his wife loved the laid-back, family-friendly vibe of Silver Lake, so they bid on a 1920s hillside with a charming Tudor style and a tree-lined backyard , the horizon extends all the way to the Hollywood Sign. But there's a flaw: The space has recently undergone a bland makeover, dimming its turn-of-the-century charm with its mundane finishes and unfavorable layout.

Alexis Somerville bought the house to discover its potential, but they were both very new to the process. Realising they were in trouble, they called up their good friend Meghan Eisenberg, an interior designer who worked for Joan Behnke & Associates and had just opened her own studio. Eisenberg helped them find an architect, Jeff Troyer, who set about demolishing the property, relocating the front door, adding a central hallway, new bedrooms, a pool deck, and even carving out a climb on the site's downhill slope 1000 square feet of new living space.

To restore the old-world charm of the building, Troyer and Eisenberg created vaulted ceilings clad in oak planks, classic Chantilly parquet on the interior floors and cobblestone on the patio. Troyer and Eisenberg wanted the building to look like it was there forever. The client also wanted the space to feel timeless while also being relevant.
