Utopia at Casa Decor by Mayice. Photo by Nacho Uribe.
For Casa Decor 2022, Imanol Calderon and Marta Alonso of design and architecture studio Mayice devised Utopia, a concept space that showcased their luminaries designed in collaboration with lighting brand LZF. The dreamlike exhibition combined a retro-futuristic aesthetic with master craftsmanship and a focus on sustainability.
Located in the heart of the Salamanca district in Madrid, the building housed 57 spectacular spaces designed by a collection of prestigious interior design professionals to celebrate Casa Decor’s 30th anniversary.
For Mayice and LZF’s room, the concept was based on the creation of spaces within spaces, combining natural materials, organic shapes, colours and inspiration. Using sections from versatile wooden modules that will be reused, the exhibition was an exercise in creativity, as the space imagines the future by giving free rein to desires. A sensitive, positive and cheerful installation, Mayice sought to convey a sense of transformation, collaboration and empathy.
Presenting their Eris, Estela and Dune collections, the designers play with the contrasting materials of glass and timber. The symbiosis between these cold and warm materials results in reflections that poetically envelop the magic of the backlit wood veneer, evoking an emotional and native response. Hand-blown borosilicate glass pieces by the renowned artisan Eduardo Garuti, raise the level of mastery of each lamp, turning them into unique works that are revalued over time.
Everything manufactured will be reused, from the modular pieces to the furniture, as well as the linen textiles or the wool carpets. The paint used on the walls comes from clay, a material that will return to nature.
