“Gu” Chair
MAD * Sawaya & Moroni
“Gu” is Ma Yansong’s contemporary interpretation of the traditional wooden armchair. Drawing reference from skeletal structures (“gu” translates to “bones” in Chinese), the design’s joints create a network of sinuous forms – similar to that of connective fibrous tissue. Thus, each surface of the chair fuses into one another, forming elegant seams that mutate from something natural into something more futuristic, making it seem more like a growing organism than a chair. The strong directionality of the chair’s heavy wood grain follows its smooth curves, further emphasizing its sculptural and organic silhouette that forms the most original contours of the human body.

“Pingtan” Lamp
MAD * Artemide
Originally conceived as a museum, MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, re-interprets the vision of the large-scale Pingtan Art Museum into a dynamic small-scale lighting object for Italian lighting company Artemide. The Pingtan Art Museum, one of MAD’s most iconic museum designs, represents a long-lasting earthscape in water: the sea, the beach, the oasis and the slope all interconnect with each other, forming a harmonious capacious space with the mountains in the distance. Recalling the experience of natural elements that blend together, the abstract, organic design of the lamp has been rescaled down to a transparent shell whose curves have been modelled to create an illuminated landscape. “Pingtan” has been imagined to bring that same emotion and energy found in nature into the interior space. Coming alive with a slight and gradual glow, it creates a poetic ambiance within the indoor environment.

天镜
Fifth Ring
MAD * Interni
“Fifth Ring” creates a new dimension inside the courtyard of Milan’s historic Seminario Arcivescovile – a seminary built in 1564 for St. Carlo Borromeo. The presence of the circular ring inside the square of the courtyard’s four walls stands as a symbol of mankind’s continued search for perfection, while also defining a new dimension for the traditional courtyard. From a bird’s-eye view, the large suspended ring of light acts as an architectural, fifth façade. But from the ground, the illuminated circle frames the sky, drawing the viewer to look upwards, towards the infinite universe.
Pools of water give off spectacular reflections, forming an infinite perception of space between the ring of light, the water and the sky, giving visitors the feeling they are walking amongst the clouds. As it looms above, the “Fifth Ring” acts as a portal to a fifth dimension, opening up the dialogue between humans and the celestial unknown.
