The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB) is designed around the principles of collaboration, efficient and flexible use of space and accommodating the needs of different users, all within the parameters of a sustainable new landmark for the West Cambridge Campus.

“研究者之家”
The design creates an uninterrupted, reconfigurable wrap of serviced laboratory space, placing the ‘researchers’ hub’ between its wings. The offices, teaching space and social zone form a separate building within the complex, arranged over four floors, overlooking the garden, West Cambridge lake and green belt countryside beyond.

松弛有度的场所感
“壁龛”
The ‘researchers’ hub’ contains academic offices, teaching and social space and library, together with central imaging support and pilot plant space to allow larger scale installations. The building celebrates the value of the ‘in between’ space with projecting oriels creating niches where small groups can gather adjacent to the laboratory. A strong sense of openness is achieved throughout, removing physical barriers between activities and the silo mindset that they foster.

敞亮的玻璃回廊环绕庭院,充分利用自然光线,避免了传统科研建筑中昏暗的、人工照明的走廊。
The circulation wraps around the garden space and courtyard, avoiding the dark, artificially lit corridors typical of research buildings and providing opportunities for breathing spaces along its length. These spaces provide places for researchers to perch temporarily to discuss or carry out work outside the labs without returning to the researchers'' offices.

At the top floor a terrace on the western edge provides external space adjacent to the board room overlooking the countryside and West Cambridge Campus. The Researchers'' House is curved to maximise daylight and natural ventilation to the research offices.

The entire facility is treated as a Cat 2 (BSL 2) laboratory space to allow the biological work to be undertaken in any part of the research facility along with a Cat 3 (BSL 3) laboratory suite, contained within the facility for work with Home Office notifiable pathogens.
