Completed in 2014, the BC Passive House factory is an ‘all wood construction’ demonstration project. The building was the vision of a company dedicated to the concept of truly sustainable construction methodologies, typified by the international Passive House Standard. The building consists of a large open workspace that is used for the construction of their wood based building systems. The mezzanine offices, support spaces and showroom are built to the Passive House standard.

Located in Pemberton, BC, the building utilizes its southern exposure to harvest solar energy for the offices and showroom. The 360-degree clerestory windows in the workspace provide natural daylight and spectacular mountain views.

 The main structure of the building is Douglas Fir glulam post and beam, with solid wood (SPF), cross laminated timber panel walls, all manufactured in BC. The roof assembly consists of prefabricated ‘2x12’ panels that assisted the erection of the glulam structure. The use of these prefabricated structural components allowed for the building’s super structure to be set-up onsite in 8 days.

 The natural daylight and exposed wood finishes within the building provides a warm, comfortable, and inspiring workspace. The main motivation for the project’s design was the belief that industrial buildings, which make up a vast amount of our built environment, can be just as important, and well considered, as our more public and ‘architectural’ buildings.

 The building exterior was finished in fir and larch ‘2x4’, pre-assembled, wood ‘screens’ that were covered the entire façade. The design of the ‘screens’ incorporated a varied density, or openness, over the clerestories, to provide solar shading on the south and west facades, while maintaining the mountain views on the east and north faces. The result is a simple, cost effective façade that subtly responds to, and embraces its unique and beautiful surroundings.
