While approaching in a contemporary way, we have layered pattern and texture in an almost Moghul sense…
Mandarin Oriental has travelled to the Middle East along the Silk Road, collecting thoughts and ideas along the way. Planning was approached in the traditional Islamic style, taking the journey from the garden, through the arrival porte cochere into the enormous lobby space, with water features and walkways, stone bridges and teak decks as you arrive at the beach. It is an urban resort, blurring the lines between inside and out. Our pathway take us through a forest of light as canopies of crystal sparkle like the ocean in front.  It is a giant mansion on the sandy dune, it is the Riveria of Dubai, an eclectic mix of contemporary East and West; rich on texture and reflection, from the weathered travertines to the polished timbers, subtle leathers, shimmering bronze. Linen textures, velvet, embroidery all combine to create an inviting and relaxing interior, which morphs from sandals to deck shoes and a blazer. Patterns can be as simple as a cerused oak plank wall, or travertine laid in multi directions feeling more like a cobblestone street.
The Interior design of The Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai combines a variety of influences as a reflection of the dynamic vibrant city of Dubai. One side shows the sparkling ocean and sandy beach, the other shows the metropolis of Dubai. Big Contrast. As landscape was limited, maximizing the indoor-outdoor space was critical to develop the property into what some might call an urban resort.
DESIGNWILKES original design has been inspired by a trip to Dubai at the time of year when the flame of the forest trees were in full bloom, the canopy of orange blossoms brightening the landscape. It was the inspiration for the idea of a “Canopy of Light”.  In our planning of the lobby we wanted to connect the front of the hotel to the beach side, so the idea of an islamic based garden stretching through the lobby was then accentuated with our “Canopy of Light”.  We could have used real trees, but thought they would have been substituted with artificial and look downmarket like a shopping mall or the airport. The idea of doing trees in crystal with sparkle would be unique. It spoke to our overall concept of the Dubai Riveria, simultaneously incorporating glamour and a resort setting. And so our forest in our weathered travertine garden was born. The styling is contemporary. We pushed for trees that were stylized, focusing on the canopy, with light in their trunks, almost deco in their approach, like fine jewellery.
The metaphor of the blown crystal with lighting effect is a symbol of each flower hand blown by the natural air flow. In addition, our position on the beach influenced our design. We have purposely avoided coloured light. We wanted to replicate the silver sparkle of the water; the dappled surface of the ocean beyond is brought forward.  Our sandy coloured travertine floor, like a sandy beach has a wave or sparkle washing across; it twinkles like the sun, or undulates like the waves washing upon the shores. Our trees poetically unite our location in terms of geography and culture.
We wanted to create a home on the ocean, as well as a room with a view. You enter by vertical cerused oak panels in the foyer, with an Oriental chair in black lacquer and mother of pearl inlay. As you turn the corner, you find a full bathroom in gorgeously selected Staturio marble, or leather finished Persian travertine, depending on the guestroom or suite.
A walk-in wardrobe is on one side and across the hall, a full bathroom with shower room, powder room, double vanity and floating bathtub. It is all very spacious and elegantly appointed.
There is a zig zag of shagren on the vanity front, the angles appearing against the surround of the venetian mirror and on the plaster cornices.
We chose colour palletes that are almost singular in appearance, but against a background of linen, cream, velvety beiges create one strong colour. Think of beachouse cabanas, all painted white, with a colourful door in orange, green, blue or red. That’s how we approached our colour selection.
