Firm: Gensler
Type: Commercial › Office
STATUS: Built
YEAR: 2018
The completed office space for law firm Bartlit Beck spans five floors of Chicago's historic Courthouse Place built in 1893. This project has been ten+ years in the making for Gensler and took a full 2 years from design to completion. Residing in the same space which saw countless infamous prohibition era trials including The Black Sox and Jazz Age Trials (which the Chicago musical was based on). The building boasts 18' high ceilings, 15' high exterior windows, and a masonry vault that runs vertically through the entire building (to keep records safe in a fire). The project is a full reimagination of the structure and interior with new exit stairs, rooftop deck, shifted structural masonry walls, openings to create connecting stairs, and an entirely new flooring system throughout. This project truly bridges the past and the present through a celebration of its historic materials and details, all embodied in progressive interpretations and sophisticated design.
