Madre - Inspired by the tonal changes of the sun and the ocean from which the Pizza Montenara is created. Themes of religion, superstition, psychedelia & chemistry bring the warm embrace and glow of Madre.

Initial briefing was to ‘stage’ the kitchen, placing importance on the chef and their dedication to the food produced. Madre has been programmed in a lineal arrangement so that no patron dining will have their back to the chef. This lineal arrangements of tables & lighting brings the experience of the restaurant to the street front. Programming the venue looked to embraces its surroundings, a bar the welcomed the street, diners you can follow to the kitchen and softly glowing windows that open to the urban surroundings.

Further brief development draws from the chefs strong religious beliefs (the restaurant was blessed prior to opening) and superstition. The Italian game, La Tombola is used as a reference for most items in the restaurant. Collaboration with the identity designers sees numbers placed on items within the venue referring to the game and its superstitious beliefs.

Psychedelia brings together both religion and the chemistry of the food. Sun and ocean are used as a base palette of flesh and blue tones. Heavy use of blue is the blatant reference to the deep ocean, hence the strictly blue kitchen that provides its offering to the strictly blue dining tables.

Our clients are pizza stars of the McLaren Vale, owners of Pizzateca. They have branched out with Ettore Bertonati at the helm of their CBD kitchen. Ettore's menu is founded on a seawater, sourdough starter Napoletana pizza.
