Faro, capital of the Algarve is the hotbed of Portuguese Modern architecture, with about 500 buildings constructed between 1940 and 1980. The Modernist is part of that collection, built in 1977 by famous Portuguese Modern architect Joel Santana.
Located in the centre of Faro, it was formerly the office of a shipping company. The building was quite abandoned since 2010. Regarding the architecture, designed by PAr, The Modernist green and outstanding heritage approach is much about the integration at the cultural and affective landscape of Faro. It means that not only the construction meets the excellence of the environmental requirements, in terms of energy consumption and the guests comfort, but that the constructive solutions used make it special, because they reinterpret the modernist architecture of this city.
These solutions are rooted in the collective memory of the site, both respecting the modernist building and giving priority to materials produced national and locally. The project objective was making of this building an example of Faro Modern Architecture heritage conservation and converting it into an hotel.
As a principle, we pursue the reinterpretation of modernist culture by contemporary logic, using national and local materials.
The starting step was to keep the volumetry and the elements of the modernist building, the relationship between the exterior collective spaces with the new autonomus appartments: the vertical accesses, the existing facades , the main walls and the bathrooms.
This delicate integration of the building at the site allows the guest to fully benefit of the modernist genius loci, since the building has turned again become part of it.
In terms of materials and construction the building was renovated with natural, local or national materials, in order to respect the architectural original DNA and to limit the CO2 footprint construction.
The mainly used are the national and locally extracted red limestone, the windows and furniture in wood and the plain exposed brass fittings. But also the existing building reinforced the modernist cencept with the criation of the small outdoor space to the south - balconies in order to take advantage of the lively modernist lattice of the façade, the accessible green pátio and a stone rooftop, that extend the Ria landscape at our feet.
In the end, the hotel retains its own identity, intensified by the renovation project and by the experience of its inhabitants.
