Willing Coffee is situated in the leafy, historic town of Guildford. The client’s brief was for a classic Italian-inspired cafe that was to bring their love for competition cycling and coffee together. They wanted a warm, sharp, crisp, and inviting neighbourhood cafe.
Willing Coffee recently won Best in State, Commercial Design, for Western Australia, at the Australian Interior Design Awards. It also won Best in State for Hospitality at the DIA WA awards.
The client’s brief was for a classic Italian-inspired cafe that was to bring their love for competition cycling and coffee together. They wanted a warm, sharp, crisp and inviting neighbourhood cafe.
Design details took initial cues from mid-century industrial and cycle designs. This era was the beginning of industrial-design as a profession. In the post war world, mechanical equipment was being designed to be appealing in a household environment. Manufacturers wanted to appeal women, thus there was fluidity or softness in many of the designs. Later, designs also became influenced by the space age and had a ‘tech’ vibe. It is this contrast between ‘tech’ and curvaceousness that spoke to our brief. We reflected on Italian mid-century diners as a way to combine classic Italian and mechanical references; drawing inspiration from a period in design that was rich with possibility. The resultant design highlights an ability to use historical references in a contemporary landscape without resorting to mimicking what came before.
The challenge at Willing coffee was to accommodate the extensive list of the clients ‘must haves’ into a small space and the result is a great example of how a small space can serve a large brief. It uses a collection of well-designed joinery pieces to house everything that the client wanted without being cluttered or overbearing. We utilised in-wall shelving for merchandise, books, a hand wash station (accessible to clients) and a bar. The centre counter integrates merchandise display and overflow seating neatly concealing the usual necessary food and beverage services. The cost-effective full length unit to the rear works hard in storage.
The venue is intentionally tight on seating, increasing familiarity. By limiting the material palette to three main finishes (Stainless steel, European Oak, Persian Red Travertine) it allowed us to keep a clean aesthetic and minimize trades. The material budget was allocated to client facing zones – stone counter front and timber tables tops – while the staff areas in laminate and steel are practical and durable.

The project combines contrasting styles in a way that responds to the client's wants and needs perfectly. Timber and stone provide warmth and softness in the social areas whilst the use of stainless steel in service areas provides durability. By detailing each material consciously using a similar design language throughout it meant that they worked together harmoniously, remaining relatable to one another, creating a coherent design. An example of this is the service counter which is formed from folded stainless steel wrapping a Persian Red Travertine front. Generally, something of this materiality would feel sharp-edged and refined. The subtle curvaceousness allowed for the material to become softened and approachable.
