At an altitude of 1,860 meters overlooking the resort, the Alpe d’Huez Club Med revives the traditional mountain aesthetics a twist thanks to a warm, contemporary style. In maintaining its design loyalty to a creative and poetic spirit Studio MHNA “designed this complex as the last shelter before you reach the mountain peaks.” In the lobby, it is impossible not to stare at the pristine view of the Oisans mountains. In a warm and cosy atmosphere that combines raw materials such as wood, leather and wool, the spaces naturally open out onto each other, making it bright and easy to move around.
Studio MHNA has created various interior concepts for the restaurant by using an overall sports theme, such as the legendary Tour de France as an inspiration! The interior also makes quirky references to the invention of the world’s first ski lift, as well as skijoring, which involves skiing while being pulled by a horse.
In the Gourmet Lounge, an array of wild plants pays tribute to Gaston Bonnier, a famous 19th century botanist who identified flowers in the Hautes-Alpes in his work ‘La Flore Sauvage’. The patterns on the floors and ceilings have been decorated in vibrant colours combined with natural materials found on the mountains: stone, slate, hardwood, etc.
For the indoor pool, Studio MHNA based its design on a calm still mountain lake, with shimmering reflections of the sky to evoke a feeling of relaxation as well as the soothing benefits of water. Combining comfort with nature, guests can lie on sun loungers or curl up in oversized nests made of branches, offering cosy little alcoves that are perfect for families. A large open fireplace adds warmth to this grand aquatic space, decorated with a photograph of a waterfall that highlights the contrast between fire and water.
With a breathtaking view of the resort, the SPA offers a space for well-being after a day out on the slopes or otherwise simply just for pleasure. Due to its exceptionally sunny location, the Alpe d’Huez resort is aptly referred to as “L’île au soleil” (Island in the Sun). Studio MHNA has brought this sunlight into the spaces, as symbol of purity and serenity.
This Club Med resort has a total of 442 rooms, including 390 Club rooms, 44 Deluxe rooms and 8 suites. MHNA Studio designed the Club rooms as mountain retreats, practical yet also relaxed. This organic project embodies shades and tones inspired by natural landscapes – bright orange, blackcurrant, cranberry red and teal – the Deluxe rooms are based on the idea of “camping chic”. Moreover, luxury fabrics like leather and flannel give each room a refined feel. For the suites overlooking the slopes, Studio MHNA played with the idea of eagle nests, to create a sense of being perched on the edge of the snowy mountain tops. The rounded furniture adds the finishing touch to this cosy and elegant atmosphere.
Harmony, comfort, authenticity and softness, Studio MHNA incorporated these key elements into its design for the complete transformation of the Alpe d’Huez Club Med.
