This space which is including design and research located in the central of the Dashilan area in China, Beijing, Qianmen，in April 2018. They put themselves into the local culture, city and historical background in particular, experiencing, studying, thinking, innovating the conflict between the traditional and modern.

The COLUMN HOUSE was made of two small houses, and a small rectangular yard about 1 meter wide and 5 meters long. In order to the connect the front and back and make it become a space of integrity, we need to remove the walls, connect all the separated space, use the glass to cover the roof of the yard, make the office more openness and raise natural lightening in the house. Collaborate the exhibition area, work area and conference together. The work area in the central has a huge wood desk surrounded by chairs and corridors showing the form of Symposium and Collaborate, cooking desk and presentation desk besides the work desk, sharing the same chair and corridor to minimize the walking area, improving the utilized of the space, also it’s the experiment about living and working boundary.

For the space's integrity, all the electronics were hidden installed in the wall or the roof for avoiding seeing the products, make the daily scene normal like normal hutong house. The most interesting thing is the advancement of the usability and the convenience, the fierce ideological collision in modern world and the latest design concepts to balance those conflicts.

The house in the hutong has nearly 100 years old supported by the ols column. The part supports the roof and space is the column not the walls. After the design & research office moved in, without damage the structure, making the columns back to the original to make the owner more comfortable and release by showing the respect to the house.

This building is totally different from the neighbor's house. The walls were made of the ancient blocks, putting the wall behind the original facade to make a barrier. Keep the original window and the door in order to imply the entrance, also to keep the memory about hutong image.
