In the heart of Los Jerónimos neighborhood, declared a World Heritage Site, a
few meters away from the Prado Museum and the Retiro Park, you will find this
180sqm penthouse.
The building, built in 1905, has been segregated over the years into smaller
apartments than the original ones, except for the top floor, which maintains the
original housing scheme. The different patios that pierce the volume, mold and
bathe the perimeter of the apartment with an intense light.
At the time of starting the project, both the spatial approach and its materiality
had no relation to the original essence of the building. Taking into account the
context, and the multiple conversations held with the client, the intervention
focused on recovering aspects of the original house, adapting to the
requirements of the new program.
The spaces have been opened-up, increasing their surface and acquiring a
more stately scale, at the same time that programmatic connections, typical
of contemporary ways of living, have been made apparent.
The strong presence of white marble, which was widely used in Madrid’s
residential buildings in the beginning of the 20th century, is altered by certain
colored elements that run through the different rooms. Leather furniture in the
living room, green marble in the bathroom, mirrored doors, checkered floor in
the hallway, wall sconces, curtains, fireplaces... are some of the elements that
allude to the past of the estate and guide you through the penthouse
