The renovation of this nice historical cottage, built at the beginning of the 20th century in an expansion area near Florentine hills, has been a stimulating challenge for us. The young clients, Gaia, Andrea and their daughter Anna, relied on us to refurbish completely the private garden and two of the four floors.
Moving the living area to the basement was the main request of the family, in strict connection to the rear garden with the new swimming pool.
Before the intervention, the basement floor hosted the kitchen/dining room, immediately connected with an outer space that stood separated from the private garden. Two bedrooms, some storage closets and a bathroom completed the floor. All the living spaces was gathered in the basement with a lot of unused space on the ground floor.
We decided to reorganize the rooms disposition between the two floors: the existing bedroom was transformed into the kitchen and the previous kitchen became a nice living room, directly connected to the garden. A new passage between these two rooms was created to enlarge the space and to create a fluid living area, well-connected to nature and the rear garden.
A bioclimatic pergola was installed just outside the living area, facing the garden and creating a new “open” room – well appreciated by the family – that literally expands the inner space. To reinforce this sensation, the little wall that separated the apartment from the garden, was transformed in a large stair that leads directly to the private courtyard.
Inside, some new spaces were created by reorganizing the different levels of the floor and by adding new individually designed furniture: just under the main stairs, a long, tight and high space was transformed in a “wine cellar library” thanks to a blue shelf that hosts books and wine; the hallway that brings to the main stair, was reconverted in a “dressing room”.
From the basement, a central stair brings to the upper floor where another unused hallway was transformed in a workplace: an individually designed furniture was realized to provide Gaia a comfortable workstation for her remote working needs.
The two previous bedrooms were moved from the basement to the ground floor: in the south part, an old kitchen and a living room were transformed in a large bedroom for Gaia and Andrea. The new bedroom comes with a private bathroom, a new walk-in wardrobe and a nice balcony from which is possible to reach the rear garden thanks to an external stair
Anna’s bedroom was realized on the other side of the building, facing the main street: even this bedroom is provided with a private bathroom and a small tiny hallway that became a studio/play room for the daughter.
The design was particularly focused on the quality of the living space and internal distribution through materials and illumination. The new furniture was realized with a high-quality laminate, in close collaboration with the cabinetmaker; the new illumination was decided together with the clients, thanks to the support of an expert lighting designer.
