In minimalism, the design elements convey the message of simplicity. The basic geometric forms, shapes, graceful and elegant colors and textures, elements without decoration, simple materials and the repetitions of structures represent a sense of order and essential quality. In interior design, minimalism means spacious rooms with minimum of furniture and elements.

The 980 sq ft apartment in a typical Mumbai high rise, was divided into typically 3 bedrooms, and 3 bathrooms with living and kitchen room and occupied by a Bachelor in his late 30’s. The client wanted a space which felt like a large bachelor pad, enough to give him his own privacy but as well as flexible enough to entertain his large group of friends. The rooms needed to feel like spaces and not enclosed boxes as one would typically have.

The main element of the design in this project is the attention to space, transition, creating moods, and colors.

The key design move of the this apartment is the easy transition into each space, blurring the lines between the common spaces, which makes the space visually look much larger than it is.

Architectural space is about layering for all of the senses. Like a musical composition, spatial features come together into a symphony for occupants to experience. Bringing a space to life means that architectural function and form is not just primarily for the visual sense.

The solid brick walls between the living room, kitchen , media room and master bedroom are torn down to make way for a free flowing , open planned habitable space . The Media room with its openable glass doors seamlessly unites the dining room to the media room . The dining table, A stunning cantilevered Black Terrazzo table with a Brass edging stands like a monolith island in the space , also modestly flows into the adjoining room to become a shelf , exaggerating the connectivity of the space. The juxtaposition of the Vertical half height marble clad wall, balancing the Monolithic Cantilevered Terrazzo Dining Table with the Teak Wood Glass Door forms an interesting compositions of joineries.

The Kitchen of the house is hidden behind a beautifully crafted Teak Wood and Fluted Glass sliding Door inspired from the geometries of Piet Mondrain. A Peek a Boo Window within the door adds an element of quirk. The Door Slides into an inconspicuous pocket behind the bar unit to completely expose the kitchen to the living room . Continuity in materials, colors from one room to the other ensure that it gives the illusion of the house being one large space instead of multiple smaller rooms

The Kitchen unit Is designed in an egg shell tiled countertop with pinstriped teak wood battened shutters, making the kitchen look more connected with the rest of the spaces. The services are tucked into pockets to make the space look clean and easy to maintain . On the Opposite side of the angular kitchen counter is the main marble topped workspace which continues into the living room to become a bar unit.

The minimalist design has always clean, open and light filled spaces which are the fundamentals of this design. The use of neutral color palette, light color tones for walls, clean modern detailing and accessories and uncluttered spaces give the minimalist design a calm, attractive and interesting appeal. Sunlight is allowed to flow through the space naturally, The Wooden blinds in the media room exude and the Entire house clad in Wooden Flooring exude a sense of warmth.

Neutral Monochromatic colors like like Bieges and Greys with natural materials colors are retained to create a soothing space. The natural Materials that are used to reduce it to its essence , only to provide clarity, visual appeal and attraction by conveying and expressing the physical characteristics of the materials used and their textures.

From the Dining area one seamlessly transitions into the Media room , through 2 teak wood and glass transparent doors, that can be collapsed when required to make the dining unit stand out like as island table. The Media room with its Deep dark grey walls along with the Olive Green Rattan and Wood Sofa and Wooden blinds make the space warm, comfortable and dramatic for movie watching. The Tv unit is tucked into the wall with its Copper Mesh front and simple detailing makes a great functional unit within the space.

As one transitions from the Media Room to the Master Bedroom through a Wooden and fluted glass partition , one enters a very bare rugged and deep hued room - much like the owner himself - a deep thinker but absolutely simple. A Black Veneered Wardrobe with customised Bold Brass Handles, A Simple Clean Teak Wood Rod with Suspended Cushions as a headboard against the Low bed and a Raw Rough plastered wall behind it are the only , but strong bold design elements that make the room.

The Master bathroom too is designed in a monochromatic , Raw concrete looking vitrified tile which envelopes all the sides of the bathroom , thus making it look like an almost under construction plastered wall.

The Second bedroom has a more vibrant approach , with a diagonal panelled wall painted a fresh mint green shade, with teak wood shuttered wardrobes, and a fun open bookshelf . Small succulents in the room along with the Mint sheers and Yellow fun Pouffes makes this room more casual and vibrant than the other space.s The adjoining balcony to this room is filled with fresh flowering plants and a simple metal chair for the perfect afternoon tea.

The furniture in the living dining and other rooms is kept minimal and sleek . One sees an overlap in materials throughout the space to maintain continuity. Be it the handmade Black Stained and Cane Shoe Rack at the entry , or the Black Wooden and Cane Dining Table Chairs , or the Beautifully crafted Cane and Teakwood Armchairs and Side Tables of the living room , the overall language of the house is kept consistent .

The home is indeed a space to create micro memories for the client , to enter into his own personal space when he walks through the main door and unwind in a space which reflects his personality.
