The design of De Verbinding is inspired by the location in the park that crosses the district: on the border between city and nature. The forest park is an important link between the residential areas and the forest. The position and arrangement of the two park villas create interaction with the surrounding landscape; the two solitary volumes are located in the park as "furniture".

The two buildings seem to embrace each other and together they create a collective outdoor space. At the same time, the space between the elements offers an interesting view through the park and an unobstructed view from the apartments. The buildings are positioned and stepped in such a way that there is an optimal sun experience in and around the apartments.

The rounded shapes and smooth lines soften the contours, allowing the park to flow seamlessly along and between the buildings. Each apartment is located at a rounded corner. Therefore you have an unobstructed view of the surrounding greenery that is very characteristic of this location. The multi-sided terraces form a special outdoor room, the ultimate link between home and nature. The clear lines and the flowing, organic shapes are continued in the plinth of the building. From the park, the ground level between the buildings rises diagonally. This invites you to enter the grounds.

The combination of sand-coloured bricks and vertically placed wooden slats in the façade enhances the natural character of De Verbinding. The white, horizontal bands give the building a beautiful articulation and therefore a human dimension.

The 24 apartments are located in two buildings and vary in size from 125 to 200 square meters. The flexible layout makes it possible to create different layouts per floor. Each building has three apartments per floor. Due to the stepped construction there are two apartments per floor in the fourth layer and each building has one penthouse on the fifth floor. The individual storage areas and parking spaces are located under the building.

The building has 80 solar panels on the roof and is heated by district heating. The eco-responsible biomass energy installation is part of one of the most sustainable heat networks in the Netherlands. The installation runs on residual wood chips from the area of De Verbinding.

The barracks site in Ede is being transformed into new living and working areas between village and landscape. For years the barracks had formed a hard division between Ede and the Veluwe. An organically formed forest park will soon connect the district, which mainly consists of residential housing, with the surrounding landscape.

The positioning of De Verbinding in the middle of this forest park and at a central location in the district requires its own specific approach. The main access route meanders through the neighbourhood and offers a view of the location from different perspectives. The new building is able to connect the landscape and the building. Together they form the face of the new Simon Stevin district.
