This pro-bono micro house sits among adjacent shelters above a wooded swale within Community First! Village, a 27-acre community that provides sustainable, affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for the chronically homeless in Central Texas. A carefully-proportioned white box is animated by a screened porch and ice-house roof. The porch orients to capture prevailing summer breezes while sheltering from northerly winter winds. The location and sizing of openings facilitates cross ventilation. The double roof provides effective shade for the structure, reducing summer heat gain when the sun is high overhead. Humble modular materials lend dignity to the dwelling through a straightforward, logical aesthetic expression.
