The residential building 4D4 with is vibrant appearance plays a huge part in making SeestadtAspern a smart city and in creating the high quality of the whole quarter. The name 4D4 derives both from the location of the building site as well as the construction consisting of four single building parts.

The buildings features can be summarized as innovative, resident-orientated and sustainable, both socially and ecologically. The prudent arrangement of the four construction parts forms a loose peripheral structure that fulfills the needs of the environment and complements the surrounding. The conscious distinction of the external features of the street-side orientated facades and the facades around the courtyard create a strong identity and, at the same time, unites and embraces the building plot.

Meticulously planned green and open spaces support encounters and communication between the residents; the exciting interplay of built-up areas and open areas provides excellent connections within the structures, a variety of zones with different focal points and leaves room for development.

The smart concept is continued on the inside of the buildings: transition zones on the entrance level lead from the public to the private parts. Covered galleries, that also house the children’s playground and common rooms, connect to multileveled transparent entrance atria that emphasize the interplay between the inside and the outside. The roofs areas are designed as wellness and leisure zones accessible for all residents.

According to the different needs of its inhabitants, 4D4 provides different types of apartments. The total of 175 residential units varies in size between two and five rooms respectively between spaces of 56 to 107 square metres. Planned as smart living units the apartments are planned with the actual needs and requirements of its inhabitants in mind. Therefore 4D4 includes apartments devoted to the topics "work at home”, “young families” or barrier-free units for the elder generation.

All parts of 4D4 are executed as low-energy houses, the heating is supplied via district heating. The compact building form helps to keep energy costs low, the hanging ceramic facades contribute to reduce CO2 emissions.
