Alcasaba project has won two International Property awards. The first award was the best Architecture Multiple Residence on the level of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; whereas the second award was the best Architecture Multiple Residence on the level of the Arabic region. The project was also nominated for the same award on the international level. The purpose of the project is the design of a residential compound fit to the modern way of life without any neglect on habits, traditions and local cultures. Two types of residential villas were constructed through applying different treatments for the external facade creating homogeneity between the residential units, taking into consideration the favorable client’s request to adhere the contemporary of the modern layouts with an Islamic identity. The site was divided into internal street of 15m width (the corner lots are not less than 600m2 where as the inner lots is not less than 500m2). The team has initiated the phase of evolvement of the layout starting with the Bubble Diagrams and the sketching in which was influenced and impressed with the richness found in the Islamic architecture specially the arches and the arabesque patterns. The designer used the inner courtyard as a part of the residence to provide an open air survey for the complete privacy of the family, as it is known in the local tradition and the Arabic culture. Privacy is a major aspect in the design process to be finalized with a U shape. To decrease the use of energy, the LED “light emitting diode” was used as well as the aerated concrete blocks were installed in the external & internal walls of the residence through distributing its geometry and directing the premises towards the North Eastern side to benefit from the morning sun and the cold breeze; in addition to the use of the natural illumination as much as possible by the un-blemishing distribution of its geometry.
