Architect:Jerry Jacobs Design, Inc.
Location:Callejón San Angelo, Chimalistac, Mexico City, Mexico City, Mexico; | ;
Project Year:2015
Category:Private Houses
I was the Architect, Interior Designer and builder of the project. I like to call the style “Minimalist-tech”. I was influenced by Luis Barragan’s minimalism. I used the Lavender color for the exteriors, inspired on the Jacaranda tree flowers on the lot.
Rather than use small windows popular in mystery inspired Mexican Architecture I wanted light, and the use of structural seamless glass. I also used glass in the fireplace and a metal stairway.
The lot is 400 square meters about 1/10 of an acre, with a street front width of 10 meters (33 ft.).
Typically Houses in Mexico City are wall enclosed from the street and the street elevation faces the north, so it is a solid two level wall. Impenetrable.
Chimalistac the neighborhood is between “San Angel” and “Coyoacan (Frida’s Casa Azul) all classified Historical Character areas with XVI Century Churches and cobbled stones streets.
One of the predominant style influences is the Mexican Minimalist or Barragan Style. The style’s purity and accent of color were peaceful and attractive, however not taking full advantage in the use of natural light due to the size and shape of most of the windows.
The house is 300 sq. meters in 3 levels, and has 3 bedrooms, a family room pent house, and 3-1/2 bathrooms. The covered garage has an upper level with a servant’s room and bathroom (A standard in Mexico) and space for a future home office.
The house sits between two dead tree trunks which have been incorporated into the Architecture. On the kitchen side a Jacaranda and on the dining room side a pine twin trunks, which was so beautiful we built around it, allowing trunks to run through the master bedroom balcony and behind the back façade.
A covered walkway from the street leads to the vestibule, and through it to the garden, through a tunnel.
The Foyer is octagonal, a glass entrance door with a neo angle glass sidelight and 4 other doors, leading to kitchen, powder room, living room. All interior doors are flush with the walls, and in matching colors to disappear them somewhat.
The living room is double height, with half it’s ceiling in structural glass at a 45˚, joining vertically to a glass wall with doors. Templates accuracy being critical.
A Glass surrounded fireplace hides the wet bar. The glass heats up act as a refractor, the exposed duct and split level transmit heat throughout the house.
The kitchen top is stainless steel and offers both, opening to the dining room or enclosed with slide counter top doors.
The master bedroom, and adjacent alcove both open into the split-level living room, to keep the rooms open and connected to the rest of the house.
A metallic staircase with glass panels leads to the studio and terrace on the third level.
Architectural salvaging came from then TelasPani showroom (ArtruroPani
, Mexican decorator). Entrance set of French Doors for our mechanical room access and travertine slab floor throughout the main floor.
