The Client, a leading business personality required a place to rest and relax. With the architect, he searched for more than four years for the perfect location. The ‘place’ to have shades of green and whirling winds and a ‘villa’ to be in harmony with nature during the weekends- the perfect getaway from the daily routine until one day it becomes a ‘home’ to enjoy his retirement.
Eventually the ‘place’ was found approximately forty kilometers away from Colombo and was purchased in mid 2005. The estate, a pineapple plantation, consisted an abandoned pre school, a community centre and a cottage type house.
A bold decision was made to transform the entire setting to a private leisure garden retaining only the cottage type house with few modifications and having future plans to add in a ‘villa’. The concept of the leisure garden was developed with a landscape contractor and in order to enhance the garden, different zones were identified and architectural elements introduced.
A meandering path amidst a Mahogany forest, serendipitously stems out to the vast lake, continuing through an earth-canyon and other garden pockets. At the climax point where the journey ends, sits ‘the thicket’ embracing the resplendent environment.
An overall view of the garden is captured by ‘the thicket’. Paddy fields on one side and reflective pond on the other, allows the user to enjoy the ever changing moods created by the various seasons of paddy cultivation.
The Pavilion, a simple structure with minimal details brings the user to relax and entertain. A simple setting is created having a structure with four un-plastered rubble columns, cement cut floor and a steep teak timber roof.
It is placed along an axis which coincides with the cool winds that flow across the fields and highlights its focus towards the lush paddy fields that lie beyond. The placement encourages a sense of continuity with the feel of the lake, through ‘The Pavilion’ and towards the paddy fields.
The artificial lighting used at night brings to life various moods through manipulation of indirect lighting. Railway sleeper link placed over the dug well and projects over the paddy fields brings a dramatic conclusion enhancing its directional quality.
Built components of the development: Pavilion, carport, podium, servants’ quarters, Kennel complex, water tank structures, pump house, dug well, bathing well.
Site Area: 7 acres 36 perches
The use of material was to achieve a rugged, robust effect to blend in with the natural surrounding.
