Architect:Markus Alder Architekten GmbH St.Gallen
Location:Brunnadern, Switzerland
Project Year:2004
Category:Private Houses
Scope:
Unemployed relatives of the owners, carpenters from eastern Germany, were to help in the realization of an inexpensive construction. In order to minimize the responsibility of the structural engineering, a mixed construction system was chosen. The exterior walls were relieved of their structural functions by structural masonry core elements containing the service lines and plumbing cells, and by large span structural concrete floor slabs. Unfortunately a further employment of the carpenters was prevented due to diverse working rights. It was thus decided to produce the walls and roof with pre-constructed wooden elements.
Cost Situation:
The tight budget forced the planner and the owners to maintain minimize the detailing and the choice of finishing materials. The construction surfaces thus became the interior finished surfaces as well. The structural concrete walls and ceilings were left in their raw conditions; the construction boards of the pre-fabricated wooden elements were merely given a light stain application. Only the floors were laid with additional insulation and base layer.
Situation:
The completed home is located in a small village in the canton of St. Gallen, in eastern Switzerland. A steep local street connects the Bitzi area, lying on an eastern hillside of the Necker valley, to the village of Brunnadern below. The disadvantageous eastern orientation with minimal sunshine is compensated with the beautiful view across the valley towards the village of Degersheim.
The house has been so positioned that large banded corner windows in living areas provide views across the valley, and the windows in kitchen and eating area view to the south and provide a glimpse of the Alpstein mountain peaks (the highest mountain range of eastern Switzerland).
