ASPECT Studios is delighted to announce the appointment of Jack Qian who will be joining Stephen Buckle as a Studio Director of our Chinese operations in Shanghai.

Jack joins ASPECT Studios with extensive experience across urban design and landscape architecture, that compliments Stephen and the existing team incredibly well. He has a proven track record of leading internationally acclaimed practices in Australia and China during histime as a Director at McGregor Coxall, and as Founder and Director of Gossamer, where he delivered a diverse range of projects across both Australia and China.

Jack has over 15 years of industry experience and brings additional complementary sector knowledge to the table, further strengthening the practice’s experience across Asia. His work covers abroad range of outcomes, from concepts through to built works that span large scale master planning, public realm, cultural, civic, infrastructure, commercial, mixed use, and residential projects. 

Jack’s portfolio is underpinned by a collaborative, tailored approach, focusing on the awareness of the human experience and achieving positive environmental impacts. He is passionate about sustaining healthy studios with effective practices, processes, and culture to support his team, clients, and the delivery of successful legacies for the world’s habitats.

Partnering with Shanghai Studio Director Stephen Buckle will increase our ability to service our existing clients and bring new capabilities to the region. Together, the pair will lead the China operations and build upon the strong history of success that ASPECT Studios has had in the region over the last 14 years delivering projects such as the Urban Gallery at Hyperlane Chengdu, Gemdale One City Development in Wuhan, The Ring in Chongqing, The Roof in Shanghai, Shanghai Library East and Guangzhou West Tower.

Jack is Studio Director at ASPECT Studios where he leads the practice with fellow Studio Director Stephen Buckle in Shanghai. He was raised in Sydney, Australia and now resides in his birth city of Shanghai. Jack is an accomplished multi-disciplinary designer and Australian Registered Landscape Architect, collaborating across urban design, art, and digital media.

Jack’s led internationally acclaimed practices in Australian and China, including McGregor Coxall (as Director) and Gossamer (as Founder & Director) in delivering adiverse range of award-winning projects around the world.

Jack believes in distilling complexities down to simple, engaging, and meaningful solutions, and his work is underpinned by a collaborative, tailored approach, focusing on the sensibility of the human experience and positive environmental impacts.

Beyond design, Jack is passionate about sustaining healthy studios with effective practices, processes, and culture to support staff, clients, and the delivery and implementation of successful legacies for the world’s collective habitats.

Drawing on his strengths across both design and business, Jack has a proven track record of leading successful international practices in delivering design excellence at the industry’s highest level.

His portfolio covers multiple outcomes for explorative concepts and built works spanning large scale master planning, public realm, cultural/civic, infrastructure, commercial, mixed-use and residential projects.

Stephen is Studio Director of ASPECT Studios alongside Jack Qian in Shanghai. He is an influential designer, landscape architect and urbanist recognized for his bold city shaping projects that look to challenge and disrupt urban mundanity, carry impact and meaning, while endeavouring to address the complex social, environmental, and technical challenges faced in some of world’s most densely urbanized cities.

While all designs are derived from the same hand, each strives to be unique to themselves, their place, and time. With his perception of humanistic influences such as people, place and culture, and contextual influencesof environment, climate, and land each design strives to deliver an authentic, unique, sustainable, and meaningful response.

His portfolio of works spans across continents, cultures and climates and include many award winning and internationally recognized projects. 

Stephen’s influence, design and thinking has helped guide and forge the strategic direction and portfolio of the ASPECT Studios in Asia.
