The mixed-use development Gravity aims to catalyze an up-and-coming area by building a rich infrastructure of art and amenities, inspired by the neighborhood it calls home.

Gravity is located at 500 W. Broad Street in Franklinton, an underdeveloped area adjacent to downtown Columbus. Despite its proximity and burgeoning art community, the neighborhood currently lacks a civic gravity to anchor the district. To create this central destination, Gravity will establish a live-work-play campus with a rich program of amenities.

The campus comprises a 241-unit “5-over-1” residential building, a five-story office building and retail and community space. Within the “pocket spaces” formed by the angular buildings, unique indoor and outdoor amenities — including vegetable gardens, a food truck court and a dedicated graffiti wall — form intimate neighborhoods within the larger development. A similar strategy occurs indoors, where irregularly shaped nooks and crannies provide bike storage or co-working space.

The design was highly influenced by the neighborhood context, reflecting the area’s artsy, eclectic and sometimes gritty vibe with murals, graffiti art, sculptural installations, industrial materials and exterior cladding inspired by shipping containers.

Building modules are copied and mirrored to balance economies of scale and efficient land use, on the one hand, with variety and increased frontage as well as opportunities for public space, on the other.
The result is a complete “live-work-play” community, open to the public, that will create a new center of gravity for Franklinton.
