Atlantis Sanya in Haitang Bay is the third Atlantis resort in the world. Place Design Group have been working closely with Fosun Group since 2016 as the Landscape Design Consultant, taking four years to create the most exciting beachside recreational experience in Atlantis Sanya Hotel, Albion Residence Haitang Bay Sanya, and Atlantis Atlas Palace. The landscape design takes full advantage of the ocean view, adding another world-class resort to the popular holiday destination Sanya.

Multiple Facets of Opportunities for Waterfront Recreation

Atlantis Sanay Hotel

Creating a resort destination means not only understanding the hotel brand, but also identifying the project's unique attributes such as the site's natural assets and local culture, and how these can be shaped through design to create memorable and exciting spaces. Such attributes can be felt right at the hotel arrival.

The entry road was designed taking advantage of the landform. The gently winding arrival road takes you through lush palm groves, creating a sense of stepping into a secret place. The signature Pegasus flying horses, logo wall made of raw basic natural materials, and the Inca/South American style panels symbolizing the 'Lost City of Atlantis', are all hints that the journey to Atlantis is unfolding.

"Water" is the signature element of Atlantis, with abundant water recreational activities being one of the most prominent attractions of Atlantis. Capitalising on the hotel's excellent site location, we take the pools beyond just pools by creating multiple facets of opportunities for the way people can access the pool edges, with multiple waterfront leisure options for each of the four pools.

The four pools step down from the hotel tower towards the beach, with the largest main pool at the beach end that is more active for family and large group activities, while the smaller pools are more intimate, offering a quiet and private space. Walking through large palms and shade trees, no matter which pool you stop at, you can always find a space to your liking, whether it's enjoying the sunshine on the sundeck, or lying on the loungers by the pool after a swim, feeling the sea breeze, or taking a nap in an adjoining cabana.

The need for dining catering for long outdoor stays were also considered, with convenient and comfortable outdoor dining areas designed by the main pool. The numerous function and events spaces vary in size and configuration, while also catering for wedding, corporate events and seasonal festivals.

* The lush sub-tropical planting extends from the hotel entry to the beachside combining with the pool and recreation spaces.

The hotel podium roofs were also designed to offer a layered series of outdoor spaces linking food and beverage areas. Here, guests can enjoy panoramic views across the pools and waterpark to the ocean in one direction, with views to the mountains the other.

From the entrance of Atlantis Sanya to the beach, the entire resort is "immersed" in dense tropical planting, blending in with the natural beauty of Haitang Bay.

Slow-paced Beachside Living

Albion Residence Haitang Bay Sanya 

& Atlantis Atlas Palace

Different from the hotel which is connected to the Water Park and encourages more participatory and active uses, the Albion Residence and Atlas Palace provide a more slow-paced alternate option for experiencing the Atlantis lifestyle.

Integrating the natural coastal asset and creating more visual and functional connections between the indoor and outdoor landscape is key to the site's design.

In Albion Residence Haitang Bay Sanya, the landscape capitalizes on the outdoor space enclosed by three apartment towers to create a large lagoon pool. The focus is to create sufficient shade and rest areas around the pool as well as space for waterplay transition. More facilities include kids' pool and playground, cabanas and outdoor dining areas that cater to guest holiday and lifestyle needs.

The pool adjoins the green spine of the resort villas that connects through to the residents club, with the beach beyond. Here residents can relax by the pool, while enjoy the vast open view.

There are four main villa types in Atlas Palace, each with their own swimming pool and outdoor courtyard entertainment areas. The whole site is connected by a pedestrian friendly shaded path system, with a mix of broad flowering canopy trees and palms and lush understory planting reinforcing the resort character and bringing more comfort to the beachside tropical environment.

The beach frontage is home to the beachside VIP villas where we created a whole range of leisure options in the courtyard. Sprawling over four stories with commanding ocean outlooks, the VIP villas have each bedroom equipped with its own outdoor space with areas for Yoga, sun-lounging, multiple dining spaces and general relaxing.

The ground floor includes a large pool and spa. Cascading water features separate the pool from the back garden with its multi-use lawn with mini golf, kids play, beach club style cabana and abundant shade trees and palms. Each villa has direct access to the beachside promenade and beach beyond.
