Vitra Design Museum
Frank Gehry
The Vitra design museum is located in the riel Vitra campus in Germany, where most of the original buildings were damaged in a fire in 1981.
Famous designers including tadao undo,. Siza and zaha hated creating the park after the disaster. In 1987, Frank Gehry designed the villa design museum, which was completed and opened to the public in 1989.
Originally conceived as a shed structure, the building was intended to showcase the 2,000 or so chairs and other furniture that vibrated accumulated since the 19th century.
But his design, Frank Gehry focused on the process of building and manufacturing, turning the building into a deconstruction procedural work, in which the architectural character of "form follows function" is reflected in the 8,000 square feet of exhibition space.
The building as a whole is composed of innumerable white volumes and ramps, and the complex exterior forms correspond to different internal functions.
The sculptural form is outlined by inclined arcs of plaster, the curved white volume intersects at the angle of changing depth, and the discrete architecture presents a spatial relationship relying on each other.
The facade is composed of pure white material, and the form of concave-convex layers makes the whole building as flexible as broken and reassembled blocks.
The clever use of line elements and the changing light and shade in real time give vitro the dynamic architectural character of the museum.
As the space for displaying Vitra's collection for many years, the closed and single wall becomes the most appropriate background to highlight the details of furniture of different periods and styles. Natural light scatters from the skylight of diverse shapes, and the exhibits produce unique light and shadow effects under the action of natural light.
In the view of architecture writer and critic Paul Heyer, villa design museum in general has broken itself down into interwoven and coherent displays, emphasizing different functions and spatial needs in a seemingly incongruous volume.
“The building is a continuous changing swirl of white forms on the exterior, each seemingly without apparent relationship to the other, with its interiors a dynamically powerful interplay, in turn directly expressive of the exterior convolutions.”
