The house with its elaborate gardens, listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings, was completed in 1928 and the treatment and rehabilitation of a historic landscape brings unique issues to the design process. New special-purpose gardens requested by the City were incorporated into the historic design, combining new uses and accessibility criteria with the historic plan. The terraced gardens, constructed of Vermont slate paving and Indiana limestone walls, included a formal rose garden, a cypress allée, several formal terraces adjacent to the house, sculptural balustrades, stone staircases, and stone plaques. The water features included sixteen fountains, a reflection pool, two concrete-bottom lakes and a tiered waterfall.
