PROJECT FEATURE ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN FEATURESCoastal Classic – Mosman Residence by Ursino Architects and Made by Alas Words by Bronwyn Marshall Architecture by Ursino Architects Photography by Simon Whitbread Build by Dilcara Interior Design by Made by Alas Styling by Holly Irvine Landscape Design by ecodesign Engineering by LMW Design Group Furniture Design by Fanuli Furniture
View Gallery Inspired by an existing native tree on the site, Mosman Residence emerges as a contained and considered modern home that responds to an indoor-outdoor liveability. Ursino Architects and Made by Alas combine to instil both natural connections and a sense of elevated luxury throughout the generous family home.Sited on Sydney’s lower North Shore, Mosman Residence is a solidly grounded insertion into the site and replaces an existing home. Spread over three levels – two above ground and a subterranean custom garage space – the home comes together as a layered and open series of spaces. With connection a core theme throughout, flowing movement is encouraged through the grandeur of the interior spaces, whilst the overall palette is one intended to endure. The mostly dichromatic finishes are then warmed through the use of timber and given life through the abundance of natural stone and a heightening of quality finishes.

View Gallery Ensuring the structure would remain relevant over the coming years, a core component of the brief was to reference classical proportions. With the existing tree needing to remain, the planning of the home was divided into two wings that provide a natural separation between the private and more public areas. The minimal nature of the framework that forms the glazed openings also ensures a deliberately unobtrusive transition between inside and out, allowing the interior functions of the home to spill out into the landscape.Mosman Residence sits within carefully sculpted landscape design by ecodesign, which continues the contemporary refinement to the extents of the site. An openness defines the home, with a large and sculpted stone island bench in the kitchen as a central element of family life. Needing to serve as a meeting place for both nourishment and entertaining, the central location of the kitchen and its connection to the surrounding living zones was formative. Fortunate to have extensive views out, cleared visual access was accentuated by the glazing systems used, which direct sightlines outward. These open rooms are then balanced by private outdoor areas to match a more retreat-like feel.
