View Gallery A celebration of all that has come before it in Hobart, St David is a series of 28 individually designed residences by Room11 with Carr in the heart of Sandy Bay. Considered in every detail, the building embraces a simple material palette to create an elegant presence that cements Hobart’s position as a leader in architectural design.The architects worked in close collaboration with both the developer, Moda, and their preferred contractors to bring this singular vision to life without compromising on the individual sense of luxury each residence enjoys. Concrete, glass, steel and timber combine across a strong façade that maximises the site location and reinforces the industrial fabrication St David seeks to champion.

View Gallery On arrival, it’s apparent that a deep sensitivity to the local neighbourhood and natural surrounds has informed the design. Fronting St David’s Park right near the heart of the Salamanca Market, the park allows the building to separate itself from the hustle and bustle of the city whilst still affording amenity to Waterman’s Dock and an otherwise inner-city lifestyle.With glazed façades forming the majority of the building’s exterior, including the one facing Sandy Bay Road, the risk of monotony is broken to Wilmott Street, as St David is split into two obvious components that use an anodized aluminium material for added drama. The other façades take in the incredible vistas over Battery Point, with St David’s Park in the foreground and the city, River Derwent and eastern shoreline beyond.

View Gallery Progressive detailing simultaneously confronts the Tasmanian conditions and places a premium on design integrity and spatial drama. Every inch of the building, from getting out of the car in the basement garage, to swiping an entry card at the front door of an apartment, has been considered to create the best possible entry experience for residents and guests alike. Coffered off-form concrete ceilings combine with travertine stone and engineered timbers to ground the interiors of the homes, contrasting nicely against the expanses of glazing that invite the Hobart skyline in, framed like an elaborate sculptural artform.Nowhere is this delicate combination of materials and sensitivity to place more apparent than in the St David penthouse. A unique cantilever combines with uninterrupted views in every direction, with a gallery-style layout and large reflection pool cementing the project as a statement piece to Tasmanian architecture and the penthouse as the jewel in the building’s crown.
