A strikingly beautiful, resilient, sustainable park
PROJECT STATEMENT
Grange Park is a two-hectare green space in downtown Toronto. The park was originally part of The Grange estate built in 1817 by the Boulton family, who played an influential role in developing the young city of Toronto. The area now known as Grange Park served as the Boulton family’s front lawn. The elliptical path for carriages leading to the front door of The Grange remains as a heritage feature in the park today.

Like many inner city parks, the health and beauty of Grange Park declined over the years. In 2004, the local community began discussions to return the park to its natural beauty. Landscape architect Greg Smallenberg of Vancouver firm PFS Studio—an award-winning Canadian planning, urban design and landscape architecture firm—developed a design for Grange Park that responded to the vision created by the local community. Aldershot Landscaping Contractors managed the revitalization project. The revitalized Grange Park re-opened to the public.

PROJECT NARRATIVE:
Grange Park is a beautiful, welcoming and accessible park. The park is a versatile space, providing a pastoral setting for individuals to relax, as well as a place for outdoor activities. The large lawn in the middle of the park attracts spontaneous bouts of soccer, Frisbee playing, catch and croquet. The large trees provide a cool and quiet spot to read, snack and snooze during hot summer days.

One of Grange Park’s special features is a series of 14 quotations inscribed in paving stones along the promenade leading into the park from Stephanie Street. The quotations are from a selection of Canadian or Canada-based personalities relating to the theme of nature or to the diversity of our community. The words of these authors, poets and civic minded activists reflect the history and diversity within our community and are now permanently included in the park.

The ongoing sustainability of Grange Park is a high priority. The park has an irrigation system to ensure the trees and plantings receive adequate water during dry spells.
Rest areas and accessible seating throughout the park, including benches with backs and armrests for support. A number of benches are open at one end to allow visitors to transfer from a mobility aid. Concrete pads provide a stable base for a visitor using a mobility aid to sit beside a bench. A change in textures alerts visitors who are blind or have vision loss that they are approaching a seating area.

The Grange Park Revitalization team on winning the Award of Excellence in Large Places and/or Neighbourhood Designs at the 2019 Toronto Urban Design Awards (TUDA).
The park is designed to be strikingly beautiful, resilient, sustainable, and accessible. The design is anchored by a large civic green defined by a circular promenade off of which a number of discrete spaces have been linked to create a range of opportunities for play and social engagement.

The ‘Grove’, a zone of historic trees on the west side of the park, is being revitalized. Intimately scaled gathering spaces are carved within the Grove to create greater porousity and to provide an inviting entrance into the park.
