After visiting architect Pernilla Ohrstedt’s flat in the mid-1960s Brunswick Centre in Bloomsbury, we felt compelled to have a look through our sales listings for other homes in London’s Modernist apartment blocks that are currently for sale; here are our favourites.
This landmark building in Belsize Park was designed by Wells Coates as a radical new proposition for urban living. Progressive building techniques and built-in plywood furniture were incorporated into the design, for which Coates looked to Le Corbusier’s maxim that buildings should be ‘machines for living’ as a source of inspiration.
The penthouse has been restored and maintained to comprise a sensitive re-imagining of the original design, while an expansive south-facing roof terrace offers outdoor space.
This well-presented two-bedroom apartment is to be found in the Grade II-listed Metro Central Heights, first designed by Modernist architect Ernö Goldfinger, whose output includes the celebrated Willow Road in Hampstead.
Originally conceived as office space for the Department of Health and Social Security, Metro Central Heights was converted into a residential complex in 1997, encompassing 24-hour concierge, secure underground parking, and access to a communal swimming pool and gym.
Original Crittal windows, white-painted stucco and chrome-handled entrance doors: 1930s Modernism at its most classic and romantic. It’s to be found at the G. Bertram Carter-designed Taymount Grange in Forest Hill, which retains its original charm thanks to well-renovated apartments like this one. The owners have refurbished the original doors, cupboards and cast-iron radiators, while adding a contemporary kitchen and bathroom.
The work of Swiss-born architect Richard Seifert is enjoying something of a renaissance. His Centre Point was once ridiculed by Ernö Goldfinger as ‘London’s pop-art skyscraper’ but apartments like this penthouse at River Court East are flying the flag for Seifert’s brand of high-rise Brutalism.
Another Goldfinger classic, and a staple of London’s Modernist architectural heritage, Trellick Tower is a Corbusian-influenced high rise in North Kensington. This 24th-floor three-bedroom duplex apartment is a rare sight on the market, representing an opportunity to inhabit a piece of Modernist history.
