混合式布局，就是将规则式和自然式交错组合，并将两种形式的特点融为一体，形成既有富于形式美的庭院形态，又有内容丰富、变化曲折的自然景观。

大部分庭院兼有规则式和自然式的特点，这就是混合式庭院。这有三类表现形式，一类是规则的构成元素呈自然式布局，欧洲古典贵族庭院多有此类特点；第二类是自然式构成元素呈规则式布局。如北方的四合院庭院；第三类是规则的硬质构造物与自然的软质元素自然连接。
