Perhaps no day is more auspicious for musical instrument manufacturer Yamaha Corporation than tomorrow, March 29th, which marks World Piano Day. Inclusive of keyboards, the company has been in the musical instrument making business for over 130 years, where the high quality of its workmanship is well known. Completed in 2010, YAMAHA Ginza is a sparkling high-rise nestled within Tokyo’s oldest and most venerable shopping district.
The 14-floor facility sports an array of finely crafted instruments for display and purchase, along with a concert hall and a café. The exterior façade’s intricate diamond grid design is particularly striking. Made with newly developed gold-leaf laminated glass to resemble the color of brass wind instruments, its face subtly shifts through the course of the day with the changing intensity and reflection of natural sunlight. The effect affords the building the rare ability to express musical rhythm and variation fitting for the wares inside. This project counts the 2010 World Architectural Festival Award among its well-deserved accolades.
