Located at the southernmost part of ”the Underground Palace Garden“ at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, PTW Architects worked with Cockram Construction and McGregor Coxall to design this highly flexible building.
The design of The Calyx builds on the geometry established by the Arc Glasshouse to create an integrated space with indoor and outdoor areas for horticultural exhibitions.

Calyx: “The sepals of a flower, typically forming a whorl that encloses the petals and forms a protective layer around a flower in bud.”

The Calyx
A ‘Jewel in the Garden’ the Calyx is a fusion of Art, theatre, and Flora in Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens.
The new "Iris" podium is the most fascinating and eye-catching component of the skyscraper.

The overall presentation of the Calyx, designed by PTW Architects, is noticeable from a distance as a highly recognizable annular steel structure that serves as a porch, educational space, and retail space. The structure also features a mirror pond and event spaces to merge into one space at night.

From the interior of the rotunda, a strong cinematic impression is created. The view of the garden is sliced into discrete filmic moments, frame by frame, through the rhythm and spacing of the columns as you pass by. The Calyx is a form of camera for the garden that avoids the stereotypical single-paned expanse of a modern view as much as it resists the stability of a modern architectural object rendered in light through its siting and structural lightness.

The design of the Calyx builds on the arc geometry designed and built by famous Australian architect Ken Woolley’s in 1994. The building grafts onto the base of the Arc to create an integrated space with indoor and outdoor areas for exhibition.

Two leading radial paths provide a powerful visual and physical connection between the new built form and the wider gardens. The project built a framework on which the annular element were designed after demolition, with one half serving as a showcase area and the other as a free-standing outdoor area. Comparing to the original pyramid, this new addition fits better to the arc glasshouse.

Working closely with specialist engineering and services consultants, Jacobs, PTW Architects actively participated in the evolution, negotiation and delivery of a hybrid system that takes advantage of natural buoyancy "chimney" effects, shading and mechanical intervention for a variety of environmental conditions.

The greenhouse contains a surprising number of 40,000 plants, with the temperature, sunshine and diverse plant growth conditions taken into account in design.
In addition, the exquisite steel structure and transparent undulating glass ceiling suggest the progress of research in plant science and its attraction as an urban landscape.

The brand-new building debuted in June 2016 and has established itself as a famous landmark.
The Calyx, which serves as a hub for horticultural exhibition, research, and education, is a famous but peaceful addition to the garden.
The clever design gives visitors a seamless experience of the indoor and outdoor spaces. In addition to hosting annual events and serving as a public exhibition space, it is also available for private events like weddings and business gatherings.

The Sydney Opera House and the Royal Botanic Gardens are only separated by a tiny bay, making it a must-see destination for tourists. The Royal Botanic Gardens is a nice spot to visit with open, serene, and calm surroundings.
