Network GardenLocation: Zhonguancun Software Park, Beijing, ChinaClient: Tencent, BeijingCollaborators: OMA, Maya Lin Studio, Margie Ruddick LandscapeScope of work: Landscape design for the corporate building’s surrounding park, interior patios and large-scale food production roof garden (for a staff of 10.000)Date: 2011 - 2013Size: site: 7,6 ha; courtyards: 226 m2; food production & relaxation roof: 7.300 m2The project site for the new internet company-headquarter is located at the edge of Zhonguancun Software Park, north of Central Beijing. More than 10.000 employees and visitors use this building daily and have different expectations and requirements for the outdoor spaces: efficiently arriving and leaving with busses during morning and evening rush-hours, spending lunch hours or a quick break outdoor doing sports, relaxing or taking a stroll or meeting with colleagues. The climatic conditions in Beijing are generally not in favor of outdoor activities. However, it is evident that being outside is important for people working long hours behind a computer; to give them the possibility to connect with each other, to move and relax in their breaks and after work. A comfortable outdoor space with good micro climate will contribute to lively outdoor activities, concentration, communication and rest. The landscape is designed from inside out: The interior is organized in “fields” (areas/working spaces) and interior streets. Those are translated outside into straight and direct paths that create a web of efficient connections but also create space – fields for all sorts of activities. A pattern emerges that expresses a certain energy and that represents the social network the company helps to create on the internet. Above that network garden another element is representing a different aspect of the company: A ribbon of trees depicts the creativity, intuition, imagination and movement – “thinking outside the box”; crossing borders of the fields. The ribbon on top of the network pattern creates unexpected spatial surprises, varying spaces that are defined by the edge but also underneath the canopy and at the same time – it unifies the site in it’s entirety.Team Inside Outside: Petra Blaisse with Jana Crepon, Carmen Buitenhuis, Carlotta Basoli, Alessandro Macaluso, Mikel Orbegozo, Celine Baumann, Valentin Frechet, Yin Yin Liu, Annelies Bloemendaal, Agnieszka Zborowska and Chu LiuImages: © Inside Outside,
