As a result a competition was initiated by the Downtown Committee. Our proposal in this competition (Phase 2) is not just about giving the decayed downtown of Lexington a lasting boost by day-lighting the now buried Townbranch Creek. It provides a smart technical solution for the two main problems in this matter: the lack of water in the creek during dry seasons and the risk of flooding in the wet season. We propose to re-use the existing underground culverts of the creek for recycling, storing and flushing the water. With this concept the Townbranch Creek could actually flow through the city again and literally refresh the public spaces. Next to that the project addresses general issues of water management, traffic issues, a solution for the vast and unattractive surface parking lots, a new pedestrian and bicycle circulation, programmatic and organizational issues that all together would bring the downtown district back to life turning underused back sides into lively city fronts again and creating a chain of pleasant, multifunctional urban landscapes. Together with our local experts we selected a palette of attractive native plants that would enrich the current scheme and provide continuous seasonal aspects.Team Inside Outside: Petra Blaisse and Jana Crepon with Claire Oude Aarninkhof, Carmen Buitenhuis, Agnieszka Zborowska, Carlotta Basoli, Mikel Orbegozo, Yinyin LiuRUPP Arena Arts and Entertainment DistrictDay-lighting Town Branch CreekImages: © Inside Outside; © Spacegroup
