Location: Weespertrekvaart, Amsterdam, the NetherlandsClient: Municipality of AmsterdamCollaboration: Space & Matter, Barend KoolhaasScope of work:Landscape design for plaza, quay-side, streetscape and 1st floor public terrace of sustainable and mixed-use building in which the existing 1938 café building is integrated.Date: 2021 - ongoingSize: Public space: 1780 m2, roof gardens: 180 m2 +750 m2, curtain: 42 m x 6.85 mThe Omval FieldThe former industrial area of the Omval is a triangular island between a double railroad line, the Weespertrekvaart canal and the Amsteldorp dike. A special piece of land that will be centrally located by new developments in the neighborhood. We consider the fully triangular study area as one continuous field covered with one material. For cultural-historical and sustainability reasons we have chosen a paving of boulders, as was typical of the industrial quay of the Weespertrekvaart canal in the past. The open joints ensure a certain permeability, the strong surface allows intensive use.A diagonal grid of trees, which continues the column rhythm of the new building, runs across the square in the direction of the future breeding places. Thus, from the interior, a ’mirrored’ outdoor space is created, making the new building and the square a single entity. The diagonal distance of 9 m and horizontal distance of 10.8 m between the trees works as a flexible structuring grid for multifunctional use (work and lunch places, markets etc). The pillars are primarily spatial elements but can also be used practically as a basis for e.g. a temporary shade or rain roof, (media) connections, nodes for tent structures or light points. The group of trees forms a ’green room’ that has not only a spatial but also an acoustic-psychological quality. The space also offers an intimate and sheltered place adjacent to the water and the floating islands.Atrium LandscapeOn the second floor, a continuous wooden deck transforms itself into furniture pieces and a tribune. A floor-to-ceiling, space-dividing curtain will enclose and define the stage and tribune (formed by the preserved old facade of the former cafe de Omval), providing the necessary privacy and desired acoustic conditions.A wide strip of grasses and sculptural small trees along the edge of this floor will function as a green sunscreen.Team Inside Outside: Aura Luz Melis, Jana Crepon and Desirée PierluigiImage credits: Vivid Vision, Space&MatterImages: © Inside Outside, ©Space&Matter, ©Vivid Vision
