ReflectionsPlace: McCormick Tribune Campus Centre, Chicago, USAClient: IIT Illinois Institute of TechnologyArchitect: OMA, New YorkCollaborator: Peter Schaudt Landscape ArchitectureCoordination: Kate Orff, Landscape Architect, NYDate: 2003 - 2007Size: 1.6 haWalking towards the new student center a series of strong visual effects immediately catch the eye: spacious gardens with inlaid materials and cut-out circles, Mies’ portrait etched into the glass façade, spectacular bright orange walls, huge curtains imprinted with white ‘flowers’ and a train that dives into the belly of the building to come out on the other side. What you see is OMA’s Mc Cormick Tribune Centre at the Chicago’s IIT Campus. Inside Outside advised the architects on the interior finishes and color-use, designed the landscape and the large darkening curtains that mark the entire west facade. Taking a stroll further into the building one finds three interior gardens of different size and shape: a floating garden over the students’ cafeteria area; a patio with an enormous pine tree, reflecting its beautiful green color inward; and a sloping inner garden that flows from outside into the green cafeteria space. Pronounced colors, light effects, wall- and roof-finishes are a welcome, sometimes unexpected addition to the folded architectural shapes and its very complex and voluminous spaces.Team Inside Outside: Petra Blaisse with (in alphabetical order) Lieuwe Conradie, Marieke van den Heuvel, Mathias Lehner, Peter Niessen, KimOlde Loohuis (2006-2008) and Rabia Zuberi (2009)Film by ©Frans Parthesius, 2012
