Intercity Next GenerationPlace: the NetherlandsScope of work: Art in New Intercity Trains, Silkscreen prints on glass partitions and foil prints in toiletsDate: 2016 -2018, 2022 in useA typical characteristic of Inside Outside’s work is to create interior curtains and landscapes that are not static but that are meant to change position or change in time and can literally be moved by runners on tracks or by the outdoor wind.To design static images on partitions between compartments of a moving train is an interesting new challenge and brings us to the immediate conclusion that the image itself should imply movement as well. This is not only for the sake of the aesthetics created by techniques like moiré or lenticular effects but more for the sake of the passengers who will look at these same images for many years to come. Our real aim is to trigger people to stare into these abstract ‘moving’ images that imply depth and do not immediately reveal what they show.Upon entering the train, the toilets are immediately visible and form part of the entrance. They are striking surfaces coated with elegant curtain images that give a festive atmosphere to the hall. The soft voluminous and pleated curtains play with the toilet’s shape by transforming it or strengthening it. Once you enter the highlighted door you suddenly step into another world. The unexpected Dutch landscape image with a certain season’s climate catches the visitor by surprise. It adds a new dimension; sometimes you seem to float, sometimes the space appears optically much larger by the panorama with a far view, sometimes you feel very sheltered.Team Inside Outside: Petra Blaisse.
