Place:Düsseldorf, GermanyClient:Schauspielhaus DüsseldorfArchitect:Ingenhoven architects GmbHScope of work:Curtain design, interior advisory for foyers and restaurantDate:2018-2020The Schauspielhaus is a quintessential architectural masterpiece from the 70’s. Collaborating on the renovation conducted by Ingenhoven Architects, Inside Outside took the past as a premise for our working methodology.Like archeologists, our design team carried out an on-site exploration by which the most idiosyncratic details of the existing building were extracted, studies, and re-purposed in the intervention, with a series of 4 site-specific curtains as the result. We designed two flamboyant hostesses of candid yellow hue in the foyer, a boundless curtain of reckless luxury in the Empore, the restaurant’s curtain with a color gradient that reminds of a dewy sunset, and shape-shifting textiles of liquid concrete in the Kleines Haus. By showing a sensibility for the established structure and precisely punctuating each of the components that enhance the atmospheric whole, Inside Outside has magnified and multiplied the theater’s opulence from within. We guarantee that theatre enthusiasts – admirers of captivating stories, ever-changing mises-en-scènes, and strong-blooded, fullbodied emotions -- will not be disappointed when letting their instincts be taken by the hand of this fascinating Schauspielhaus.Inside Outside Team:Petra Blaisse with Aura Luz Melis, Peter Niessen, Nafsika Efklidou and Desirée PierluigiWeaving Empore curtain:EE LabelsPhotos © Inside Outside; © Hans Georg Esch
