Place: Oldham, UKClient: Laura Lee, Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Centres TrustArchitect: Alex de Rijke, dRMMScope of work: space creating curtain for privacy and acoustic absorbanceSize: 2.7 x 30 m double layered curtain - 50 m looped trackOfficial opening: June 9th 2017For Maggie’s Centre, Inside Outside designed a curtain that creates a room inside the living. Its aim is to supply the users an intimate, secluded space for contemplation or small group sessions.A looped track allows different configurations for the 30 meter long curtain which has two faces; on the outside a shiny and reflective silver faux leather, reflecting the space’s warm wood tones and the golden yellow of the floor, on the inside layer the curtain is the opposite and embraces the space with a matt yellow cotton velour, adding softness to the space and its sounds.By moving the curtain to the inside curve, the users can flip the curtain and change the atmosphere of the space completely. Now the curtain shows its reflective face on the inside and the yellow on the outside. Both layers have circular windows of different sizes that at first sight seem to be positioned randomly on the curtain’s surface. However, each window meets its opponent in the other layer, though never matching or fitting symmetrically. With the window’s difference in size the back side of one layer becomes the “frame” of the window of the other. Thus the windows in the yellow velvet have a silver lining and the ones in the silver faux leather have a golden one, picking up the exact colour of the floor. Together these windows create a new form and playful overlay of openings, perspectives and views while providing enough privacy for the users.Team Inside Outside:Petra Blaisse with Peter Niessen, Nafsika Efklidou and Samantha Kroliscak
